Toad Abode :)

OK, so not everyone finds toads attractive. But Godzilla Boy does. So, in order to make our “Backyard Habitat” (new favorite show), we added a toad abode. This coincides with the decision to let Slippery go back into the wild. We have been enjoying him since April, when we did our Pond Unit at our friend Captain Jack’s house.

A single toad can consume 110 crickets, beatles, slugs, moths, sowbugs, armyworms and other bugs everyday. (We were sure under-feeding the little guy!) Toads are more active at night when the slugs and worms are more active. During the day, they need a fairly dark and cool place to hide from the sun and predators.

We started with a plain terra cotta pot, some paints, and a permenant marker to decorate our toad’s new home.

After letting our abode dry, we had to go prepare the ground where we are going to place the toad’s new home.

And in the last step, we buried the pot halfway and added some earth and leaf debris to make it seem like nature. We used the bottom of the clay pot as a pond for our toad and any future toads we may attract. Godzilla Boy will have to make sure it stays filled, because toads drink through their skin by sitting in water.
