Dog Unit
This Fall we worked on a Dog Unit because GB is very intensly interested in animals, dogs in particular. We are still working on it, but here are some of the particulars:
- Find pictures, and sort into groups, all the breeds that are registered with the American Kennel Club
- Watch the video “Safety Around Dogs“, which I got free from the AKC
- Complete activities in the “Safety Around Dogs” booklet that came with the video and recieve a certificate as a graduate of Bailey’s Safety program
- Learn about dogs from this book and play the game “dog park” that is included in the book
- Take a picture of our dog (a nice close up) and label all the dog’s body parts
- Research and find trivia on the internet about dogs
- Learn about the history and training of “Seeing Eye Dogs“
- Print off a chart showing how small/large dogs age
- Read “Shiloh” by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor discuss characters, theme, setting and climax
- Read “Call of the Wild” by Jack London Make Buck’s time-line, map his journey, create a list of characters, discuss the evolution of the change in his character.
- Work in a dog sticker book that I picked up at B&N
- The Evolution of Dogs from Wolves – a unit study on the National Geographics Expeditions page.
- Go to the Science Museum of Virginia for the exhibit on Dogs to Wolves
- Learn how to draw dogs on Art Attack
- Do some dog printables on Enchanted Learning.com
- Dog jokes
- Learn about grooming and feeding of pets
- First aid and Emergency Dog Care
- Display everything on a blank wall near GB’s room
