Cool Ant Farm

We made an ant farm to show Godzilla Boy the importance of an eco-system. In his farm he has everything to make a nice cozy home for ants and their Queen. The whole idea came when I was cutting some hair and he barged in saying he had found something “Amazing” and “special”, and I had to go!! ** just for clarification, the last time he said this, he brought me to a Garter Snake. So needless to say, I was a little wary. As it turns out, it was a very “special and amazing” ant hill.

So, after finishing up my hair duties, we proceeded to find a jar and some cloth, a rubber band and some cotton balls.

We carefully scooped up the ants and dirt, hoping to grab the Queen or some eggs, and filled up the jar. Then we sprinkled crushed cereal over the top (food), added a cotton ball soaked with water (water), and covered the whole thing with a piece of cloth that will let in air (oxygen). Then we covered the whole thing up for a few days so they could get to work!

If you look carefully in this picture, you can see the tunnels they have created. And if it comes out clear enough, you can see that we did, indeed, get some eggs.

Very cheap, and stimulating entertainment!!

In this photo, GB has discovered that he can really watch them work if he uses the magnifying glass.
