Bugs… ewww!
Here is the growing collection, classification and new habitats for our yard bugs.
On the other page you saw Godzilla Boy’s ant farm. Which created a new monster: a need to learn about other bugs and their habitats and eating habits. Then we’ve tried to duplicate habitats and see what happens. The ant farm has worked great, but these guys creep me out! Uncle D will be happy to know that we used his specimen vials to catch the bugs and some prey (crickets - 3 - which have already been eaten).
This is a millipede. We found it yesterday when the guy came to pump our septic tank (another ewww!). We found out that millipedes are incredibly easy to care for in captivity. They are herbivores and basically they are insect garbage disposers. They will eat anything rotten. So we put some earth, leaf debris, rotten weeds (that had not been sprayed), and threw in an apple slice. Then we misted the ground with some water, which we will have to do every few days. The habitat won’t have to be cleaned because it will basically eat everything, including it’s own waste. Double ewww!

This next picture is of a giant Wolf Spider (omg!!!). We found out that they like a constant source of water so it has a wet cotton ball with some grass. It also needs to have live prey, so we borrowed some of the frog’s crickets to see how that worked. Three crickets caught and presented…. three are now gone, and we never got to see it happen. We’ll have to stay and watch longer next time. I don’t think we’ll keep this guy long.
