GB had a weird health weekend.
Since we came back from the beach he has had a less than stellar diet. He’s also been in a stubborn streak. And when he went to spend the night with his buddy he stupidly refused almost all food. And when he combines food issues with not enough sleep, like what happens at a sleepover, he tends to have weird irrationalities.
And he did. And I blamed him totally for it. He has low blood sugar anyway. And our family is all over us for letting him be a vegetarian. So I really want him to learn to be more aware of what his body needs.
So I made him a special poster.
Remember that old Richard Simmons Deal-a-Meal thing? Well, I thought I’d make one of those for GB. It has all the health requirements for a day, including protein (he needs 52.6 grams), dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, water, and I also included a pocket for two snacks and one for one hour of exercise.
Today was our first day using it, and it went really well. I did this for him when he was really little, but he didn’t remember it. All he has to do is take sticks and put them in the pockets after he eats. That way he’ll know what he’s eaten and what he still needs to eat to make minimum health requirements.
Oh, and by the way, his mood was way better too.

That is very clever!

That is a great idea! J. is the same way — he’ll go for a long time without wanting to eat or get the urge to mainline sugar. *LOL*

I love this idea! I’ve been reading your blog after I stumbled on it (through another hs blog), and I have to come out of lurk-dom to say that this is fabulous! My daughter has been struggling with some health issues this fall, and while we normally eat well it’s a struggle sometimes to get her to actually eat everything that she needs during the day. This will be great to try with her. Thanks for sharing it!

What a great idea! Ani was diagnosed with hypoglycemia last March (not surprising - I have it too). I may have to steal that idea and make one for her. It might help. She is SO much more pleasant when she eats regularly.

YEAH, finally a health category. It always amazes me how our body responds when we treat it the right way. We often treat our cars better than our body. There have been numerous studies done on food and mood. Keep it up Sis, you’ll be a great guest speaker in my class soon!!

Hi,
I wish we were neighbors - we have so much in common, it’s crazy!
My whole family is vegetarian and we’re finally past the nagging from friends
and family members who are concerned about the childrens’ health. All 3 kids are
very healthy! Here are a few favorites of my kids:
• tacos (use “Boca crumbles” or pinto or black beans rather than meat)
• ravioli with sauteed veges (zucc, corn, tomato, garlic, etc.)
• garbanzo bean burgers
• soups (Moosewood cookbook is amazing!)
I love reading your blog - we’re working on colonial times, and you’ve given me
many ideas! Thank you!

You have some of the neatest ideas! This is a GREAT one. I’m on a “diet” right now, and I find it hard to get a balanced diet. I realize I’ve been having way too many carbs and not enough protein! So, I’m working on making my diet more balanced.
Anyway, great work again!!!
