Sunflowers and Goldfinch

My sunflowers are a big hit in the yard. All the critters seem to be enjoying them. As they die off and the heads get dried out, I notice bits and pieces of my flowers laying on the ground and the railing of my deck. This adorable goldfinch has been enjoying plucking the seeds right out of the center of the flower. Beautiful, isn’t it?

I think next year I’d like to try to build a  sunflower house that I had read about a long time ago in Family Fun magazine. I had no idea how easy it is to grow sunflowers. And I think it would be a cool project to try.

I am so jealous! I cannot get sunflowers to grow, and I love them!

Wonderful photograph of one of my favorite birds on one of my favorite flowers!

I wrote the book Sunflower Houses in 1991 and since then many books, newspaper and magazine articles have been written about this great project. Also my book Roots Shoots Buckets & Boots has a different version, but still fun and easy to do.

Hundreds of families have sent me pics of their sunflower houses and I have enjoyed their joy with the project.

Keep up your great family adventures and I’ll check in on you periodically.

    Green blessings,

How neat to have the author visit your blog! I wish we had grown sunflowers this year. We have a gourd growing that just MIGHT make it. And, we planted a potato - I wish I would have blogged about it. Anyway, I love the photo and, of course, the beautiful goldfinch! They only visit here in the fall/winter and they are a LOT less colorful.
