Our homeschooling Adventure

Jet Settin’

GB and I are going on a BIG field trip!

We’re headn’ to Florida!

When I was a young teenager I made the bestest friends of my life. So we are going to visit them. I am SO excited! We’ll see them in only FIVE hours!!

We’re going to try to make it as educational as possible for GB, since he had to come…. as if I’m dragging the poor kid….LOL! But you know, when they don’t go to a school, they are at your side constantly. And my ’side’ is going to Florida, and so is he! Woo hoo!!

I’ve been told that the internet connection is on the fritz, so I probably won’t be able to blog while I’m there. But I’ll post lots of pics when I get back…… As if you all would expect anything less, right?

So, yeah, it’s currently 43 degrees and drizzly. I’m heading to mid-eighties. What a hardship!

Now don’t do anything important while I’m gone. I don’t want to miss anything!

Homeschool Snake Presentation

One of the dad’s in our homeschool group is very passionate about snakes. So he graciously shared his passion with a bunch of curious little kids. He even went to the trouble of renting a slide viewer so that he could teach the children all about snakes and conservation of snake’s habitats.

Since GB loves all things in the animal world, this afternoon was tailor made for him.

Below you’ll see a HUGE Green Tree Python.

Here he is close up.

As you can see, GB has no fear!

GB and his friend were just enamored with this little guy. I honestly can’t remember what kind of snake he is, I think he might be a ball snake. Most of them looked quite similar to me. Although Mr. D couldn’t understand why I thought so. Embarassed

cuddly?

Mr. D had eleven snakes and was in the process of trying to breed a ball snake, with a recessive albino gene, to a pure albino ball snake. …….. What fun!

Mr. D also had a special ‘rat room’ where he had bunches of rats. I guess they were for feeding, but I didn’t go in there, so I didn’t get the scoop.

During the following video you’ll see a Green Tree Python who enjoys nibbling on Mr. D’s arm hair. It’s a weird affectation that we are assuming he did because he enjoys it. He seemed very affectionate towards Mr. D. As affectionate as a snake COULD seem.

I have to warn you that you will also see a Corn Snake (Professor Lupin… isn’t that a funny name?) eating a little mouse. I thought GB would be upset about that. But he, like every other kid there, seemed utterly fascinated.

You see how I snuck a little more education into GB’s Spring Break? Pretty good, huh?

Our dark hour

Filed under: Fun stuff — Robin on March 29, 2008 @ 9:28 pm

Tonight was the Earth Hour from 8:00p to 9:00p.  All lights, tvs, computers, and so on were off.

My dh and I thought this would be a very good opportunity to teach GB one of our favorite card games, Spades.

Guess what?

The little booger beat us both!! He’s got quite the knack. He even set me when I tried to go nil.

Now I can’t wait for the next time Aquagirl and Jabem are home so we can all play together!

Earth Hour is Tonight!

Filed under: Rants and Opinions — Robin on @ 11:37 am

Don’t forget that Earth Hour is tonight, March 29, from 8 to 9 pm local time!

Here are some things that you can do to make our Earth better:

Use Earth Hour to make your home more energy efficient: Replace your old light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs; install power strips (so you can turn computers and electronics on and off more easily); and change your air conditioner filters.

Or:

Most of our daily activities–like watching TV, shopping online and texting friends–require loads of electricity, but do we really need to do so much stuff all the time? Take one hour for yourself to just chill… turn off the screens, put down the handheld devices and just take some “you” time to reflect, read or talk to your family. After all, why do more when you can do less?

And:

Make a Pledge for the Planet
Earth Hour shouldn’t end at 9:01 pm–it’s a chance to take a first step toward lowering your overall impact on the environment. So use part of that hour to make a personal pledge to do more–recycle, drive less often, turn off or unplug electronics, and beyond. The only way we’re going to stabilize our climate is if we make real changes in our everyday lives. That change begins with Earth Hour, and ends with a healthy planet. Of course, there are more than 10 ways to make a difference. Visit WWF’s website for additional ideas on things you can do every day to help the Earth and reduce your environmental footprint.

Watch this video to see how each one of us impacts this planet’s resources. And then watch the show on April 19th on the National Geographic channel.

And PLEASE, if you want to participate tonight, sign up here so we can see the true impact that we made together.
