Roanoke Colony
We’re still at the beach. And this is what we’ve been seeing.
This is a replica of the Elizabeth. An English ship that brought the Roanoke colonists to the new world in 1587.
The interpreters were so cute. They obviously enjoy what they are doing and spent a good deal of time with us. One thing I learned about their old world speech was that they always pronounced the ‘k’ in words like knife, know, and knowledge. So we had fun trying to use words like that the whole time we were on board the ship. And now I ‘k’now how it was originally pronounced.
This was the captain’s quarters.
GB is checking the time.
I’m not sure what the nifty little gadget on the left is called, but the purpose was really ingenious. Basically the sailors put a peg in the board for each day that they followed a certain direction. For example, if you went North for three days, you would put a peg in the point of the star going North, one for each day.
These hatches held the cannons. GB is deep into little boy fantasy land - shooting at …. I don’t know what.
Time for a snooze in the itty, bitty bed.
This was the blacksmith’s shop in the settlement.
GB is trying his hand at a game called skittles. Looks an awful lot like bowling to me.
