Our homeschooling Adventure

FREE Virtual telescope!

Two weeks ago my Dad introduced me to a cool, FREE program; Google Earth.

We played with it a bit, and I could see lots of Geographical possibilities for this program.

This week Google Earth released an updated version that includes SUCH a cool feature! I’m stoked! It’s called Google Earth Sky. This is a virtual telescope feature that allows internet users to gaze at the stars, planets, nebulae, etc.

In this video, Sally Ride (the first American female Astronaut) explains the sky feature with a representative of Google Earth.

So, I had to give it a try. Man was it cool. I put in my home address…. and Google Earth took me there. Then I clicked on the ‘Sky’ feature, and it started (in camera mode) to look up, as I would, at the sky. It showed what the sky would look like FROM my house. Then you can zoom close to the stars, or watch them in time motion. But not only can you see the stars, and what not, above your own house… You can go to other places like Paris, and look at the stars from the Eiffel Tower, too. How cool is that?!

This will definitely be added to our Science curriculum. And it’s FREE people!!! Go get it!
