Our homeschooling Adventure

Zookeeper for the day

GB had a chance to go behind the scenes today at the zoo. Moms were not invited, so I can’t give you a blow-by-blow of the encounter. But I can relay the highlights as they were relayed to me.

The kids were allowed back into several habitats they normally do not get to visit. He got to hold and pet a boa constrictor. He got to pet the kangaroos, one of which was a blind baby kangaroo, whom he insisted hopped in slow motion. They got to hold the penguins. They got to feed fish to some of the huge birds (he couldn’t remember what kind they were). He got to ride on a Galapagos tortoise. They learned about the care and feeding of the animals and all the research that goes into recreating the animal habitats. And he learned the names of some of the animals that we enjoy each time we come for a visit.

They stayed for lunch and got to do a zoo craft (which GB did not participate in because it was too artsy for him….LOL). And by the time I picked him up at 1:30, he was a wilted little boy. He was very hot and thirsty, but full of excitement. He wants to go again, but next time in the Spring or Fall, so it won’t be so hot. I’m not sure they do these kinds of programs in other seasons, but I guess I’ll find out the next time we go. I can always get a group of homeschoolers together.

  1. How fun!!! Can’t believe you didn’t get to go and take photos… :-) Glad you got a photo on the turtle, though!
