Our Summer swim team is going really well. I don’t think we’ve had a single meet where GB has not dropped time off of his best times. And it’s been a tough year. The year that kids turn nine, they have to do 50 meters instead of 25’s, and it involves mastering a flip turn at the wall. That can be pretty tough for these little kids. Although, I must say, some of our team’s 9-10 year olds are absolutely huge. We have a boy in GB’s age group who is literally taller and way more muscular than me. I swear. He has a huge advantage, but our kids do have a wonderful attitude. It’s more important that you improve your times as much as you can.

Swimming is a very social event for GB. He has such a good time at the meets. He plays with tons of little boys his age and they all get along so well. And when he comes home from a meet, even though it may be 11:00, or later, he is SO hyper. It takes him a while to come “down” from the meet.

GB wasn’t very good at the foot sports, soccer, baseball, basketball…. But he really seems like he’s in his element when he swims. So I’m glad for that. You need to have an activity that makes you feel like you are doing well. And when you improve EVERY time you give it a try, it can only be a good thing. :-)

One of the good things about swimming is that even when he’s a bent, and misshapen, old man, he can swim. Old men don’t play soccer, or baseball, or basketball….. but they can swim. It’s good for the joints…. or so they say.

  1. It is a great sport and something you can do until you’re very old. And, it’s wonderful that he keeps improving. My dd enjoyed her friends on swimteam, too. She is now telling me she wants to do it again next year. Our summer group is over and I kind of enjoyed the break this year.
