How to cool off if you’re wearing a black fur coat

Filed under: Animal World — Robin on July 3, 2007 @ 8:33 am

GB and I went to the Metro Richmond Zoo yesterday and had a fab time, as usual! We love the zoo and could easily amuse ourselves there every week, because the animals do funny things every time we go.

We were enchanted by the playfulness of the bears. It was hot. And it must be hideously hot with a thick, black, fur coat on. Thankfully, the zoo provides their habitat with a really nice waterfall for them to enjoy. And they were really enjoying it on this day. ;-)

My husband has some kind of connection with the orangutan at the zoo. Everytime we go he does some communicating to my dh. This time dh wasn’t with us, and it’s too bad, because the orangutan was in high, hilarious form. Someone had thrown a water bottle over the creek that separates people from the ape island. And that funny creature had gotten the cap off, and was filling the bottle up from the creek, and drinking it. When he’d drunk enough he upended the bottle over the top of his head to cool himself off. Now isn’t that SO smart that it’s scary?

GB and I decided to do the sky ride this time. Usually we skip it because it costs $3.00 each. And if you’ve bought yearly passes, it’s kind of fun to go there and spend nothing. We always bring a picnic and our own drinks. So it is VERY cheap. But for some reason, this time, we both had an itch to try the sky ride. It was so hot that most of the animals were sleeping in the shade, BUT it was still fun and exhilarating to be so high up, above the animals and all the people in the park. Our ride passed right over top of the Rhinos who were snoozing against each other like best friends.

  1. I’ve never seen bears acting like that! Thanks for sharing the video. The orangutan looks like he found a way to cool off, too. What a great day!
