Weird sky
Today at the pool, we looked up at the sky and saw the strangest thing. It was kind of like a rainbow, but there was not one drop of rain. Nor had there been any rain for days. So it was odd to see this in a sky that was bright blue, with white fluffy clouds. Glad I had my camera handy.

Cool, isn’t it!!! I read about this phenomenon over a year ago and since then I’ve seen it twice! Check out my blog entry: http://alexml.blogspot.com/2006/10/rainbow-in-cloud.html

Rainbows are created by the refraction of light through a water droplet. Most of the light will pass on through the droplet, but some will be reflected off the back side (inside) of the droplet. The reflected light will come back out the front of the droplet. Since light travels more slowly through water than it does through air, and since different wavelengths travel at different speeds, when the light comes back out of that droplet, it is refracted into the colors you see just as though it passed through a prism. You can see a rainbow in a cloud, just as you did here, or you can see a rainbow immediately after a shower while there is still moisture in the air, or you can see a rainbow in the mist, such as mist created by waterfalls (i.e. Niagra falls.)
