Backyard habitat
Our backyard is becoming a haven for new critters. Because of the ready supply of bird seed, I believe we’ve had more birds than ever. Plus, with all the seed scattered around, we’ve been getting a lot more wild flowers. For the last month we’ve been enjoying the thought that a momma rabbit had her babies under our deck. And now they are out and about, everywhere in the back yard. They are so cute, and getting bigger all the time.
Yesterday I saw a chipmunk traveling around the perimeter of our house. But as soon as I pulled out my camera, he sensed me, and ran away. He was definitely moving toward those free seeds just laying all over the place.
Last night my dh came in after dinner, and told us that the dogs were going crazy. They had found a full size tortoise on the driveway and were kinda scared of it… LOL! Poodles aren’t very fierce ![]()
So we all jumped up from the table and ran out to watch what I believe was an Eastern Box Turtle make it’s way around the yard. He was really worried about us and kept tucking himself back into his shell. This was a great opportunity to reinforce the differences between turtles and tortoises. GB remembered all his facts and rattled them off for Aquagirl with ease. The turtle finally settled back near the swingset, and we left him back there to mosey to his heart’s content.
