Our homeschooling Adventure

Friday

Filed under: Just my thoughts — Robin on April 6, 2007 @ 11:35 pm

Fridays are good. Especially this “Good Friday.”

When I think of Jesus, suffering on the cross, all day, on this day, it puts everything into perspective. My problems and sufferings seem SO minor. I don’t want to get all preachy, because that’s not the way I am, but these are my thoughts on this day. So, I want to thank Jesus, for everything he went through today, for me.

On a lighter note, Aquagirl is home from college! Yeah! I’ve missed her a lot this time. It seems like a long time since she was on Spring Break. I can’t believe it’s only been four weeks. Since she’s home, I don’t get as much computer time, because she, like me, loves to play The Sims 2. It’s a great game and we both love designing cool houses. She is working on a monster-huge house right now. And I can’t wait to see it finished.

GB and I finished his Math curriculum today. Now we’ve finished History/Geography, Science, Bible and Math. The only bit we have left is about a week’s worth of Language Arts. When we are finished, I will administer the CAT (California Achievement Test) and send it in for grading. Then we will start a long bout of unit studies. GB has requested a wide variety of studies. He wants to work on Space (with a little sub-unit on aliens and ufo’s), and Botany, and The Revolutionary War, and Owls, and (this is funny) he wants to learn about the different branches in the military. I hope I can get enough info on them to satisfy him. I also want to touch on an on-going manners unit. We did a bit of that last year and he NEEDS a refresher. I just really want the end of our third grade year to be fun. Because that is what he will remember.

We have two field trips coming up after our Spring Break. We are going to the Shirley Plantation with other area homeschoolers. And we are also going to Henricus Park, where he will learn about the Powhatan Indians and the English colonial settlers from the 1600’s. I really think he will enjoy these trips and you know I will post lots of pictures. :)

Here is an updated picture of our tomatoes, for the Tomatosphere project. It’s been nine days and we have lots of little sprouts. I’m not sure which ones are the ones that have been exposed to space, but they seem to be growing. Our “S” group is thriving much better than the “R” group. We have 20 out of 30 plants sprouted in the “S” and they all look firm and healthy. The “R” group has only 16 sprouted plants, but they don’t look as vigorous. I’m pretty sure we’ve exposed them to the same conditions, so I must assume it’s because of the pre-exposure of the seeds. We’ll see as the project goes on.
