Chuck, a foot, and a boot :)
We took today off

Tomorrow is GB’s 9th birthday. He wanted to go to Chuck E. Cheese…. but can you all imagine what CEC’s is like on a Saturday. Now picture the little guy hobbling around with a broken foot. My idea was to go this afternoon. One day early. That way he wouldn’t get trampled and would virtually have the place to himself….. I am a genius. It worked. Daddy took the day off and came with us and we really had a blast. All the machines worked and gave tickets and the pizza was hot and yummy. With our accumulated tickets, we were able to leave with a bag of cotton candy, a small snake, and a bean-bag-type hammer. He was happy.

He and DH are really into their games….
This is the only way I will ever beat DH in a game of bowling. I got 165 and he limped in with a 114… he-he-he!
We also went to see the orthopedist today. As expected she had to take more x-rays. GB quite enjoys that and likes looking at his “skeleton.” It was confirmed that he broke the foot, but we also learned he had a broken toe, also. But it wasn’t all bad news. The break was not in the growth plate and since he is so young, he should heal fairly quickly. It’s also good that his sport of choice is swimming. He can go back to practice in a week, but cannot use fins for 3 weeks. He also should not jump in and land on the foot. He got a nifty little boot to keep his foot supported. I think he likes the crutches better, but I think he would have gotten tired of them quickly and I feel better about his balance in this boot.
We do have one additional worry…. The ortho doc was concerned that GB still walks frequently on tip-toes. It doesn’t impede him at all, but she said she wants to evaluate him again when his injury has healed. She said walking on tip-toes could be a sign of a neurological problem at his age. But I’m going to put that out of my thoughts for now. He seems good to me, and he seems to be walking on tip-toes because he WANTS to.
GB doesn’t know this, but we are moving along at a nice little clip, as far as his curriculum goes. Working as a college student (this is what he calls it when he does one subject per day) allows us to work quickly and efficiently. We can really talk in depth on his subjects and I can really make sure it has sunk in. At this pace, his boxed curriculum will be finished by mid-April. We will also be done with our Weather Unit and the Iditarod Unit. At that time we will have Spring break. Then I will test him (CAT) for the county. After that we will do a series of subject units. So far, he has expressed interest in the following units: Insects, Reptiles, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Our State of Virginia, Egypt (again), and a Space Unit that will encompass a mini-unit about aliens… LOL As you can tell, these are completely interest-based, but I think that is what keeps him so enthusiastic about homeschooling.
